it's to act as a transporter for the ions when electrons are produced from the copper it's left with Cu2+ ions which have to go to the other copper plate and yeah that's where they build up.. im assuming that because that would be in a normal redox equation.. though yeah just got out of high school so i dont see how this is renewable without putting a powersource in to reverse the reaction.. in my mind it's more like a rechargable battery but hey what do i know

those of you looking to power your entire house with this, remember youre still using a lot of energy to oxidize (or reduce, idk) the copper with the stove... very cool DIY project though
